Dhaba in the Middle of the City – Review of Angeethi

Angeethi features in this series on dhabas. When it comes to comfort factor during travel highway dhabas fill this gap with elan.  The khatiyas and homely atmosphere and food fill the soul and tummy like no one else can. This was a dhaba in the middle of the city. Closed down unfortunately

Angeethi – Dhaba in the middle of the city

The food adventure this time brought me to Angeethi. I was actually searching for a dhaba in the middle of the city and finally I was surprised when I was guided to Museum Road. Never heard of a Dhaba there. Then I walked two times in front of the hotel searching for Angeethi 🙂 (silly me) and finally I was told Angeethi was on the top floor. It was a weekday and I was amazed to see the crowd in the Lobby.

Well there is also a Bamboo shoots restaurant which I came to know on my further explorations serve yummy Chinese cuisine (more on that later) which also has quite a crowd waiting in the lobby to get in. I got in the lift and was whisked up to Angeethi which is on the 4th floor. Lucky me I was alone so I just had to wait 6 min maximum (believe me I kept looking at the watch) till I got a table.

Before rushing to the food part lemme explain the ambience of the restaurant. It?s simply grand. Not the grandeur grand but something different. The kitchen is right in the middle of the hotel completely open where you can see those guys preparing the yummies. Behind them its like right out of leaflet of Hyderabad or Lucknow with an advertisement of raw mutton, filmi posters featuring really old movies like Sholay completes the authenticity of the arrangement. It feels like you have been transported to a different era and no longer present in the jazzy and cosmo Bangalore.

The stewards and the hostess who took down my name for reserving the table were extremely courteous (did I mention that apart from the watch I was also looking at the hostess!! Guess not) and gratifying in a way. They really know how to pamper a customer.

I started my voyage gastronomique with Jal Jira, which is a real tangy sour drink good for digestion and very refreshing. That really started my taste buds to tingle all over with delight. Not many places give you such a good jal jira pani believe me, it takes a master to make that properly. For starters I ordered mutton Burra kabab and chicken tikka which was ooh la la. I was floored completely. I had not eaten such a good and authentic burra kabab since I left Delhi. (Kareems was the place in Purani Dilli that made exceptional burra kabab.) The chicken tikka was pure evil. Buttered to perfection with the chicken masala and butter oozing away. I was in heaven. The achari aloo is pure sin and fun

For the main course I ordered a mutton Rogan Josh and kadhai chicken . Both those dishes symbolized the perfection of the Chef. It was mind blowing the taste buds asking for more with every bite.

I finally ended the Une expérience magique with the usual and dependable gaajar ka halva that was no less evil with pure ghee. The hotel has a paan stall inside where cigarettes and paan is available. The paan was good but since I am not a paan eater cannot tell you much about that. I just wanted to try it.

The stewards as mentioned were really very nice and the service was quick and prompt. It was really an experience to be in a dhaba in the middle of the city. The price was reasonable enough and I managed to finish my experience there for under Rs. 4000/- . I know what must be going on in the readers mind but for once in a while experience I really don’t spending a bit and Rs 4000 was, considering the experience a real deal.
