Ramasseri Idlis of Kerala

I have known about Ramasseri idlis since my childhood.  I used to visit Chittur in Kerala abut 50 kms from Coimbatore. There were a couple of relations there including my grandmother. This was way back and I did not visit for a better part of 12 years after that. Memories aside, Ramassery Idlis have always been popular here. Ramassery is an extremely small village and is very easy to miss without Google maps. The locals have been giving confusing directions since time immemorial :). Imagine the pain people used to take for travelling all the way to Ramassery to pack some idlis.  Considering pre internet days it seems quite a journey to make and quite expensive too.  It was always these idlis along with the kerala sambar and spicy chutney and that taste has always been part of my memory ever since I can remember.

Ramassery idlis are quite flat and extremely fluffy in nature unlike the regular idlis. It is also made in sets of three.  Only now have they come into the limelight with internet and social media promoting these gems to the world in general. Made in an interesting utensil and delish to eat steaming hot with sambar, chutney and podi is mind blowing :D.

Here’s a video of its making. We did this journey two years back.

Here’s where you can find them

  1. I didn’t know there is a variety of idli which is flat. In the video, it looks like it must be taking a lot of time to make a considerable number of idlis since they are cooked one at a time.
