Shaap is part of the carnivore series where Phenomenal World covers local non veg cuisines from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.Read on…
Shaap in Malayalam simply is a slang which means a place where you get toddy. The best of the food is believed to be available in the shaaps as accompaniment to the toddy. Read about my experience in Gods Own Country and toddy here.
What we wolfed at Shaap?
Beef ullarthiyathu – Fried with coconut bits, this is my favourite dish always when I visit Kerala. I liked this dish
Beef shaap fry – Beautifully done beef and well spiced.
Prawns roast – Absolutely brilliant. The burst of flavors was spot on
Chicken fry – Not bad but I am not a chicken person. Prefer read meat and seafood
Netholi fry – Nicely done. Crunchy
Chicken chatti chor (chicken rice in a pot) – This was a complete meal with chicken, rice, gravy, pickles and a very nicely done chutney made with red chillies, tamarind and Salt.
Puttu beef – Absolutely brilliant. The puttu was moist with the beef mixed in. The beef itself was melt in the mouth. My favourite among the dishes
Liver fry – Well made liver. I am not very fond of liver since its rarely made well. This I ate without any issues.
Kerala parotta – Cant go to a kerala restaurant and not order a parotta. I didnlt eat it though
Fish curry and steamed rice – Nicely done gravy. The fish could have been better.
rice gravy, pickles and a phenomenal chutney made with red chilli, tamarind and salt. The puttu was lovely. Moist and had flavors of the beef. The beef itself was melt in the mouth.
Brilliant stuff and stuffed ! Here’s some glimpses of the food.
