Was invited to taste the offerings of Pepper Cafe in Ulsoor, Run by Jimcy and her family, it has a nice old world feel with wooden interior finish and a wooden staircase that goes to an upper level.
After the introductions and photographs of we started off with some mocktails. Green apple and watermelon were very refreshing and balanced. Then there were the sangrias with Red and White wine. The red one had a beautiful spicy notes of cinnamon..
The Samara red wine was served exactly in the right temprature as I like my red wine. Slightly cold but not chilled
Their menu is very extensive and has a lot of dishes that would attract the mind and heart
Starters were a revelation followed by some fulfilling main course and blissful desserts.
Starters….
MOZZERALLA CHEESE BALLS
Soft centered, crunchy balls of black olives, apples, olives, walnuts and cheese, served with a cocktail dip. I love anything cheese so this worked right its way into my to eat list.
STUFFED POTATO SKINS
Baked skins topped with Mexican flavoured chili beans, mozzarella & olives, served with a sweet chilli dip. A very earthy kind of feel and packed with flavor
CAJUN CHEESE FINGERS
Herbed, spiced cheesy sticks, served with a sweet chilli dip. Hell Yes!!
TERIYAKI PRAWNS
Herbed grilled, prawns, served with pomegranate salad and honey balsamic dressing. I found the prawns a tad overcooked but the flavor and balance was spot on
CHA CA
Vietnamese street food. Fish cakes with salad and a tartar dip. Cant go wrong with this dish. Crispy on the outside, moist in the centre. This will appeal to all sea food fanatics.
CHICKEN CROQUETTES
Succulent chicken cutlets served with zesty pomegranate salad & balsamic dressing. Am not a big chicken fan and found this average
MAIN COURSE
PARMESAN PANKO CRUSTED FISH
Lush Japanese style bread crumbed fish, pan fried, sprinkled with parmesan, served with mashed potatoes, garlicky spinach and anchovy dressing. A lovely dish but a tad too much salt. Balance that and you have winner of a dish
GRILLED PORTUGUESE FISH
Basa seared with spicy Portuguese marinade, pan grilled served with a seasonal salad & herb potatoes.
I loved this for its flavor. It had the right heat to keep you eating but enough to make you not cry
CHICKEN STEAK IN BURGUNDY MUSHROOM SAUCE
Pan grilled chicken breast in a red wine pepper mushroom sauce, served with mashed potatoes and assorted vegetables. Along with the vegetables this was a beautifully complete dish….
SPINACH STUFFED CHICKEN SUPREME
Juicy grilled chicken stuffed with herbed spinach and mozzarella, in a rich creamy sauce, served with herbed vegetables and mashed potatoes. Eat this when hot or it can get dry.
SPINACH CHICKPEA FETA ROLLS (VEG)
Light pastry rolled with tossed spinach and chickpea, smeared with tom yum glaze, served with buttered rice and herb roasted potatoes. It had a very Indian taste of bakarwadi!! Loved it
PEPPER CAFÉ SPECIAL SIZZLER(VEG)
A grilled cottage corn cheese topped vegetable stake, served with mushroom cheese cause, buttered rice and herb roasted potatoes. Had both the steak and sizzler version. Trust me and stick to the sizzler version.. You will like it
PEPPER CAFÉ’S SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS
Succulent lamb and feta meatballs served on a bed of tomato herbed spaghetti. I loved this because it was hot and spicy. Traditionally not a very hot dish I like this version which appeals to the Indian palate
PESTO PASTA
Garnished with mushroom, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, sautéed vegetables and flacked almonds.
AGLI OLIO PASTA
Garnished with broccoli, mushrooms, haricot beans, baby corn, carrot, herb, chilli flakes, olives & sundried tomatoes, tossed in olive oil. Veered away from the traditional dish this was again a spicy one. Usually eaten without anything on it but only olive oil, this will appeal to most customers for its spice
CHICKEN AGLI OLIO PASTA
Garnished with broccoli, mushrooms, haricot beans, baby corn, carrot, herb, chilli flakes, olives & sundried tomatoes, and chicken, tossed in olive oil. Same as above with chicken
THE PEPPER CAFÉ SPECIAL ‘FARM HOUSE’ PIZZA (VEG)
Topped with roasted garlic, sliced onion, chili flakes, broccoli, baby corn, olives, jalapenos, and sundried tomatoes.
SPICY CARIBBEAN PIZZA
Topped with spicy barbeque chicken, onion, bell pepper, jalapeno, olives, shredded basil and chilli.
I preferred the veg over the non-veg. The veg had more lively flavors. The crust was a little dry but the toppings were good.
DESSERTS
Oreo cheese cake – Oreo goodness in a dessert !!
Banofee Pie – A beautiful dessert with the sweetness
Sticky toffee pudding – Not my cup of tea. For those with a sweet tooth, go for it
Chocolate brownie with ice cream – Nothing to complain about. Average
Chocolate mousse – My favourite among desserts, this was creamy smooth chocolate at its best.
